The J. Norman Martin Prize for Women in Banking

The J. Norman Martin Prize for Women in Banking is intended “to recognize women in banking for the hard work they do,” according to the Senior Vice President & Trust Officer at Monticello Banking Co. who funded the prize.

With 47 years experience in the banking industry, Mr. Martin is in a unique position to know the industry in which he works. He served as Vice President & Trust Operations Officer for Citizens Fidelity Bank & Trust Co., Louisville, Kentucky, 1959-1977 and as Vice President & Trust Officer for Kentucky Bank & Trust Co, Madisonville, Kentucky, 1977-1983. From there Mr. Martin went on to take the Senior Vice President & Trust Officer post at Cardinal Federal Savings Bank, Owensboro, Kentucky, 1983-1994, before becoming Vice President & Senior Trust Officer at First & Farmers Bank of Somerset, Kentucky, 1994-1999. He joined Monticello Banking Co. in 1999 and is responsible for the complete operation of the bank’s trust department.

Mr. Martin also has been active in the Kiwanis Club from 1980 to the present. From 1980-1998, he served as President of the Kiwanis Club in Greater Madisonville, Owensboro, and Somerset, Kentucky, respectively. During 2006-07, he served as Lt. Governor for the Kentucky-Tennessee Division 13.

With a history of working to better the lives of others, Mr. Martin set up and administered in 2000 a scholarship for funds that were bequeathed for the purpose of providing scholarships to students attending Somerset Community College. He championed The Mattie Helen Elliott Scholarship, offered through Regents Bank in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Mr. Martin feels strongly that women in the banking industry historically have gone unacknowledged. It is his intention to recognize the efforts of hard-working women who constitute a large percentage of the work force in the banking industry.

"Hopefully, this prize might inspire women to further their educations,” Mr. Martin said.

The J. Norman Martin Prize for Women in Banking is a cash prize in the amount of $1,000.00. The prize is open to nominations from banks located in the counties where Monticello Banking Co. is located: Casey, Clinton, Pulaski, Russell, Wayne, and Warren. Nominees must have served as Customer Services Representatives for two to five years and demonstrated excellent work habits as well as potential for growth.

The inaugural J. Norman Martin Prize for Women in Banking was awarded to Miranda Anderson of Somerset National Bank at an awards ceremony hosted by Monticello Banking Company of Somerset in May 2007. Ms. Anderson said she planned to use the $1,000.00 cash award to further her education. She is keenly interested in banking and finance.

The J. Norman Martin Prize for Women in Banking is scheduled to be awarded again in 2008. For more information, contact Dr. Jones at drjones@jonesfoundation.net or 606-678-0880.
